Biography: Life of Chiang Kai-shek

Born 1887, Died 1975


Chiang Kai-shek was born on October 31, 1887 at Chikow, Chekiang Province. He attended the Military Staff College in Tokyo. Chiang returned to China in 1911 and took part in the revolt led by Sun Yat-sen that established the Chinese Republic.

After Sun-Yat-sen’s death in 1925, Chiang became commander of the Nationalist army. He led a successful campaign against feuding warlords resulting in the reunification of China in 1928. Chiang became chairman of the Nationalist Government. He led a campaign to eliminate the Communist Party in China.

As commander of the army General Chiang Kai-shek battled the Japanese from 1937 until the end of World War II in 1945.

Chiang was elected president of the Republic of China in 1948. When the Chinese Communists won control of China in 1949, Chiang fled to Taiwan and there he established the government of the Republic of China. Chiang hoped to retake the mainland, but promised the United States not to attack without their agreement. Chiang was re-elected in 1954, 1960, 1966 and 1972. He died of a heart attack on April 5, 1975 in Taipei.
