Essay on The Niagara Movement
In 1905 WEB Dubois and William Monroe Trotter put together a group of all black militants to create an organized protest movement.
On July 11, 1905 the group met at Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada and adopted the resolutions forming the Niagara Movement. The organization called for an end to discrimination and full civil rights for African-Americans. WEB Dubois was named general secretary of the Niagara Movement.
The Niagara Movement renounced the accommodation policies set out by Booker T. Washington in his “Atlanta Compromise” speech in 1895. Washington’s speech accepted segregation and advocated education and hard work as means for improving the life of blacks.
Through protests, distribution of literature and lobbying against Jim Crow laws, the Niagara Movement worked to make white America aware of deteriorating racial conditions and the plight of African-Americans.
Due to the lack of funds, poor organization and the opposition of Booker T. Washington, the Niagara Movement only lasted a few years. The Niagara Movement was disbanded in 1910.
Despite its short life, the Niagara Movement had succeeded in bringing white liberals into the movement. These white liberals, with a core group from the Niagara Movement, founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1910.
WEB Dubois became the only black on the Board of Directors of the newly founded interracial NAACP. The leadership of WEB Dubois in the NAACP formed the main link between the two groups.
