Biography: Life of Harriet Tubman
Born 1821?, Died 1913
(Araminta) Harriet Tubman, the Moses of her people”, was born about 1821 in Maryland to slave parents. She was physically strong due to her hard work as a field hand.
In 1844 Harriet was forced to marry John Tubman, who later deserted her. She eventually remarried.
Harriet Tubman escaped from her master and headed to the North around 1849. Prior to the Civil War she led as many as 300 escaping slaves to freedom in the North. Harriet Tubman made 19 trips to the South to bring the escaped slaves along the “underground railroad”. The escapees were moved from house to house, stations along the railroad, where the owners would hide them. Because these trips on the underground railroad were so dangerous, Harriet enforced strict rules on the fugitives. The runaway slaves were forced at gunpoint to go on if they wanted to turn back or surrender. During her trips to the South, Harriet Tubman was never caught by the slave owners.
During the Civil War, Harriet Tubman served as a scout for the Union army, as well as a cook and nurse for the troops.
Harriet Tubman eventually built a home in Albany, New York. When she died on March 10, 1913 she was buried with military honors.
