George Washington Carver Biography

Biography: Life of
George Washington Carver

Born 1860, Died 1943

George Washington Carver was born of a slave mother in 1860 at the farm of Moses Carver near Diamond, Missouri.

Not being strong enough to work the fields, Carver was put to working the house and garden. He proved to have a way with plants. When he was a teenager, George Washington Carver left the Carver farm and went to Kansas where he worked his way through high school. Carver attended Simpson College in Iowa. In 1896 he obtained an M.S. degree in agriculture from Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts.

Based on his work with plants while studying for his degree, George Washington Carver was appointed head of the agricultural department of Tuskegee Institute by Booker T. Washington in 1896.

During his forty-seven years at Tuskegee, George Washington Carver made notable advances in the agricultural and industrial use of plants. He made numerous products from peanuts and sweet potatoes. His discovery of non-food uses for plants provided diversification of farm crops and profitability for the farmer.

George Washington Carver died in 1943.
