Biography: Life of Barack Obama

Born 1961


Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Obama studied at Occidental College in Los Angeles and Columbia University in New York City. He received a J.D. degree from Harvard University in 1992. At Harvard, Obama was elected the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review.

In 1992 Barack Obama married Michelle Robinson in Chicago, where he made his home. They have two children.

In Chicago, Barack Obama organized voter registration campaigns and worked for a civil rights law firm. Obama became a professor at the University of Chicago where he lectured on constitutional law.

In 1996 Barack Obama was elected to the Illinois State Senate. A staunch liberal, Obama worked on a state Earned Income Tax Credit, health care for those who could not afford it, increased funding for AIDS prevention and care, and authored a death penalty reform law.

In 2004 Barack Obama decided to run for the United States Senate and captured over fifty percent of the primary vote. A scandal forced his Republican opponent, Jack Ryan, to withdraw from the Senate race. This afforded Barack Obama the opportunity to campaign across Illinois until a new candidate could be found. The voters came to know and like Obama. Alan Keyes, a Marylander, was eventually chosen as the Republican candidate. Barack Obama won the general election with seventy-six percent of the vote.

Barack Obama was thrust into the national spotlight with his delivery of a keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. Considered a rising star in the Democratic Party, Barack Obama began his term as a United States Senator from Illinois on June 3, 2005.
